Overview
Navigating the world of dating apps can be a double-edged sword for many single individuals, as they grapple with the challenge of superficiality and the ease of swiping right and left without genuinely considering someone’s character. In this digital age, where first impressions are often formed in mere seconds, the true essence of a person can be overshadowed by their profile picture or a brief bio. This tendency to judge potential partners based on looks or limited information can hinder the chances of discovering deeper, meaningful connections. It’s a challenge that leaves many wondering if they’re being seen for who they truly are, beyond their outward appearance.
The product
A music-centric dating app that goes beyond swipes and profiles and uses music to create meaningful connections, removes the barriers of traditional matchmaking, and transcends the limitations of other dating platforms.
The challenge
Creating an opportunity to get to know each other despite the sense of endless possibilities that the application generates, taking into account the barriers that accompany each user
Competitive analysis
The competitor research I conducted focused mainly on three of the leading dating apps in the Israeli market
Main findings
- one notable observation that immediately caught my attention was that the initial user information prominently showcased included their profile picture, name, occupation, and city of residence
-
I’ve identified certain functionalities that can enhance the likelihood of user interaction.
For instance, in one of the applications, a time limit is imposed for initiating a chat once a match is established; otherwise, the match is voided.
Additionally, some profiles provide visibility into whether the other user has sent a message even before a match is made, which not only increases the probability of a match but also addresses the communication delay often encountered in the app’s chat feature.
Research
I started the research phase with surveys. The survey was conducted among 30 singles
Here are some of the significant findings that were received:
- Lack of Matches (only a small percentage of men get matches in significant numbers.)
- Limited Responses (girls frequently do not message back after male users send the first message.)
- Little Interest in Arranging Date, even when the conversation is going well, users struggle to arrange a real-life meet-up.
- Lack of Time
- Slow Dating Process (dating within social circles tends to generally be a slow process with significant time between the first meeting and an actual date.)
- The user profiles do not effectively mirror the individuals in their real-life personas.
- A preference for in-person meetings.
- Insufficient conversation topics – one of the factors contributing to stagnant, unprogressive conversations.
One of the findings that particularly caught my attention pertains to the main activity on dating apps- swiping.
Regarding the research query posed about how extensively users examine profiles before making swiping decisions (right or left), the data illustrates that a significant majority, specifically 86%, do not allocate a substantial amount of time before swiping.
This suggests that the primary method of filtering is based on the information presented in the initial view.
The solution
Emphasizing shared attributes among users, rather than prioritizing conventional filters (like appearance or occupation), through leveraging the strong connection to the world of music as the primary commonality among the app’s users.
